Bring a Child to Class with You! Upcycling: Green Arts & Crafts at The Scrap Box.
Join the Green Arts Evolution! Upcycling is the artistic, inventive use of recycled/reused materials. This innovative series offers monthly ‘hands-on’ classes that creatively explore ‘green ways’ by using unusual and everyday recycled materials in the creation of art and craft projects.
Five classes will be held on location and under the direction of the artists connected to Ann Arbor’s premier art-centered non-profit ‘green business,’ The Scrap Box. For over 25 years, materials usually headed to the landfill have found new life through the artists, teachers and children that frequent The Scrap Box. This unique setting is where creativity and recycling join forces, generating unique artistic expressions while promoting a ‘greener’ Earth.
These classes promote imagination and are suitable for a wide range of ages and interests. In addition to art, we will also be making references to the science, technology, engineering & math related to the projects. This model demonstrates the way adults can enhance conversations about the math and science that is embedded in everyday activities, thereby developing children’s thinking skills and engaging interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). Handouts of directions and activity extensions will be provided.
Connecting this approach to Scrap Box materials provides an opportunity to emphasize reusing, recycling, and re-envisioning solid waste materials in our community while promoting creative self-expression.
Well-known professional local artists and art teachers, including Karen Gallup, Suzanne Higgins, and Nels Nelson will teach these classes. Family Math and Science connections will be contributed by Tasha Lebow, program manager at UM School of Education’s Programs for Educational Opportunity.
