NEW FOUR-COLOR POSTERS
Have you seen our spectacular colorful posters advertising The Scrap Box? We are very grateful to Heidi Woodward for designing them and working with Goetzcraft Printers to print them, without any charge to us. Her collages were created with Scrap Box materials. There is a large poster, 2 versions of an 8” x 11” poster, and 3 different flyers. You may have seen Heidi’s artwork before -- she did the artwork for the Ann Arbor Book Festival the past several years. If you are a teacher and have a place to display one of these posters, come on in to get your free copy. If others have public places to display one, we’d be grateful for your help.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Reluctantly we say good-bye and express our thanks to two of our board members, Eric Lipson and Jessica Anderson. Eric served as board president and our in-house lawyer for several years, and also enjoyed helping with kids’ activities at special community events. Jessica served as secretary of the board and was our connection to the Ann Arbor public schools. We appreciated her enthusiasm for recycling and her helpful advice relating to elementary classrooms.
Both Eric and Jessica have promised to stay connected to The Scrap Box, he with legal advice when needed and she with developing curriculum ideas utilizing Scrap Box materials for her new kindergarten classes.
Currently we are searching for several new board members. Do you share our passion for recycling and have some time to help us out? The board meets once every month or two and is responsible for the financial oversight and direction of the organization. Interested individuals can talk to Karen at the store or to our board president Al Solvay, at 734.668.1901.
NEW AT THE KIDS' TABLE
Starting this fall, we are offering a specific project that can be done at our kids’ table (our Creation Station). There is no cost to you, but we ask that each child only makes one project. The staff will be happy to help you find the materials that you can purchase to make additional projects.
SEPTEMBER’S PROJECT OF THE MONTH
This September we feature a dry-erase memo board. Start with a piece of our thick white plastic (scraps come from the U of M Orthotics department). Choose special items to decorate the borders of your board, such as colorful stickers and other sticky foam pieces, or use strips of double-sticky material to fasten on items like buttons or sewing trims. When done you can use our special dry-erase pens to write a message or draw a picture which you can later wipe off. Young preschoolers may prefer to use the white plastic as a base for a collage. That’s fine – we keep saying there is not just one right way to use our materials. If you decide to purchase your own dry-erase markers at an office supply store, look for the ones that are low-odor and non-toxic.
NEW MATERIALS AT THE BOX
This summer we have been successful in collecting a large quantity of paper in various sizes. Most of it is white, but we also have some colored construction paper. It is great for kids’ drawing paper; some of it would make good handmade cards. Most of this paper is sold for $1.00 per inch (a stack that measures one inch high). Some of the whole boxes are only $5.00. You’ll find the paper on a long table in the hallway in the Green Room area.
SPECIAL SALE ITEMS
This month all of our foam on a roll has been reduced to 50 cents a running foot. That’s half off; check it out. With Halloween costumes to make soon, it may be just what you’re looking for. Also on sale are the small white plastic buckets (from Barry’s Bagels) for only 10 cents each. They’re good little trash containers to put on the table while creating with Scrap Box materials. You can decorate them to use for trick-or-treating or just as storage containers.
THE SCRAP BOX IS ALMOST
25 YEARS OLD
It happens all the time now: young adults visiting the store tell us they used to come to The Box when they were children and have fond memories of the fun they used to have. What a great advantage our kids have had to grow up with the opportunities of creating and exploring with good junk! We hope to continue offering this wonderful service to the children of today and tomorrow, and with your continued support we aim to do so. Please continue to tell others about us; that’s our best form of advertising. If you’d like to get involved planning some special events to celebrate our anniversary, talk to us at the store.
THANKS, GORDON
At the beginning of each summer Don Ragland, our guy who brings in most of the stuff from the factories, takes off for a two month vacation. This summer we were delighted to have Gordon George take over. He kept us well supplied with materials, helped stock, and got the storage room better organized. Gordon, you were great!
